Inner Sanctum
Stay Connected through Journaling
text by Carolyn Felderman
Keeping a journal is a way to keep the guiding light of your spirit burning. Allow your own words to reenergize you, feed you, nourishing your soul from within. Begin to journal…
Women wear many hats. Professional and work at home women rarely choose to enter their own sanctuary of relaxation time. Yet, to nurture our spirit, we need time of our own to savor.
One way to do this is by journaling your thoughts. Socrates said, “Know Thyself.” What better way to begin than putting the pen to the page.
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Anne Frank and Bobby Sands all kept journals. Although we all learned about their life through their words, the true gift was what they gave to themselves. They wrote their journey of life, finding strength by doing so.
Keeping a journal is good for you. Many teachers, physicians, psychologists, and therapists recommend keeping a personal journal as a form of helpful therapy for healthy living. To journal is a form of self expression used as a creative tool.
Once you have taken the thoughts from the mind or those that come straight from the heart, place them upon the page and they remain there. You rarely carry a tension or burden with you after you write it down. The page holds them much like a child’s handprint in freshly poured concrete, remaining there for a lifetime to go back and read as you like.
It’s your journal. There are no set rules; make them up as you go. No pressure, no restrictions, no right or wrong way, you’re the boss. The most important thing is that you are comfortable with yourself. A spiral bound journal or one that opens flat usually feels the best. Use a favorite pen and pick a cozy spot for your time with you. You’re worth it.
You may well find that the computer works best for you. Besides written thoughts, you may wish to express your feelings with different art mediums. Adding watercolors, drawing in the borders, or keeping solely an art journal may better fit your personality than a written one.
Collage can be interesting as well to work with, pieces of your thoughts pulling your life together forming a whole.
Express yourself however it feels good, using a pen, a paintbrush, with scissors in hand, or your fingers upon the keyboard.
By writing only a few lines a day or writing page after page brings one to see the reality of their life before them. Often one line entries are just as effective.
Journaling stimulates the spirit like a double shot Café Latté or a slice of seven-layer Belgium chocolate cake.
Once you have found your niche, journaling will be a process where something magical takes place. Listening to your inner spirit will bring positive changes to your life. Your journal will become a biography of a famous author, you.
Keeping a journal helps you organize your thoughts. Communicating with yourself strengthens your communicating skills with others. It opens up the world, clarifying your misunderstandings. Goals become important to set and easier to reach. You take quiet time for yourself, gathering patience not only with yourself but with life as it surrounds you. Anxiety is lifted when tears are shed and replaced with laughter.
We never know how long our time is, or how long the time for someone else we love is.
A journal holds cherished memories, crisp and clear, avoiding the fading that happens with time. Keeping a journal empowers you to define your path of life.
Spring, the season of rebirth is in the air. Enrich the soil of your life. Let yourself bloom to full glory. Treat yourself to a new hat, finding your inner spirit through journaling.
